St. John of the Cross

Born in 1542 in Fontiveros in Castile on 24 June 1542 and died in Ubeda on 14 December 1591, he was already a priest and theologian when in 1567 he met Santa Teresa d'Avila.

With her he was the main architect of the Carmelite reform, for which he had to suffer ignominies and imprisonments.

Giovanni asked only for suffering and humiliation.

In recent years he had to suffer terrible physical pains, which however were nothing compared to his spiritual sufferings.

In his poetry he shows that he has experienced all the degrees of contemplation and that he has suffered tremendous dryness.

Indeed, his is the spiritual doctrine of the nada or the cancellation of oneself in order to know the only true reality that is that of God.

His writings were first published in 1618.

He was beatified in 1675, proclaimed saint by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726 and declared doctor of the Church by Pius XI in 1926.
