Former chancellor and close friend of the King of England Henry II, he was appointed by him as archbishop of Canterbury, giving him control over the English Church.
But Thomas put spiritual interests before political ones to do his utmost to defend the freedom of consciences.
Because of these ideas, he ended his friendship with the sovereign and was persecuted and forced by them to take refuge in France.
Made peace later with Henry II he had the opportunity to return home after six years of absence.
Determined not to deny his ideals of faith, he was assassinated inside the church of Canterbury.
His martyrdom caused a huge echo in the hearts of the population and the king was forced to make public amends on his grave.
