The Saint of the 7th December is Saint Ambrose, which name day is celebrated and other saints are celebrated on this date.
Aurelio Ambrogio, born in Trier on an uncertain date, perhaps in 339, and died in Milan in 397, was bishop and writer, is considered one of the most relevant personalities in the 4th century Church.
He came from a family with Christian values and was the third son of parents from important dynasties.
Following in the footsteps of his father, he was directed to an administrative career and, having finished his studies, had important public offices.
When he was appointed bishop, he assumed an ascetic lifestyle, giving all his goods to the poor.
His wisdom in preaching and his prestige played a fundamental role in the conversion to the Christianity of Saint Augustine, of Manichean faith, who had come to Milan to teach rhetoric.
Ambrose also had several basilicas built, four of which were placed on the sides of the city, probably thinking of the shape of a cross.
He is revered as a saint in the Christian Churches, including the Catholic Church which counts him among the four greatest doctors of the Western Church, together with San Girolamo, Sant’Agostino and San Gregorio I papa.
It is commonly known as Ambrogio di Milano, the city of which he is patron along with San Carlo Borromeo and San Galdino and of which he was bishop from 374 until his death.
In Milan there is the basilica dedicated to him where the relics are kept.
Closely linked to the pastoral activity of Saint Ambrose were his books and writings, often resulting from a simple reworked collection of his homilies and therefore written in a tone that is very similar to that used in his speeches.Recommended readings
