February 16: saint of the day, name day

The Saint of the day February 16 is Santa Giuliana di Nicomedia, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

Saint Juliana of Nicomedia

According to what was stated in the text of the "passiones", Giuliana was the only one of her family to be Christian, the African father on the contrary was a staunch supporter of pagan divinities.

Having been promised in marriage to Evilasio, Giuliana initially placed the condition that she would marry only the prefect of the city, but later added another, that is, the one with which she declared that she absolutely did not want to marry a pagan.

So it was that Evilasio lost his patience, suing her before his court, but nothing managed to change her mind, not even the torture and the prison.

After some time she was condemned to beheading, coming to consume in this way that martyrdom she had so longed for.

Together with her, her friend Barbara was also martyred, the tragic event took place in Scandriglia in the province of Rieti, in the open countryside.

Martyrdom occurred when Maximian was emperor.

Santa Barbara was also born in Nicomedia, corresponding to the current Ismit or Kocael in Turkey.

Between 286 and 287 the young Barbara went to live in the rustic villa of Scandriglia, since her father Dioscoro, who was an assiduous collaborator of the emperor Maximian Erculeo, had had extensive possessions as a gift in Sabina.

The relics of Santa Giuliana over the centuries were moved to different locations.
