Chair of St. Peter the Apostle
On this date the anniversary is celebrated in which the memory of the particular mission entrusted by Jesus to Peter is highlighted.
History has handed down to us the existence of two chairs of the Apostle, before his journey and martyrdom in Rome, the seat of the magisterium of Peter was in fact identified in Antioch.
At one time the liturgy celebrated these two moments on two different dates, January 18, that of Rome, and February 22, that of Antioch.
The calendar reform unified them in the only feast on February 22nd.
On this holiday, explains the Roman Missal, the mission of teacher and shepherd conferred by Christ on Peter, which he constituted the principle and visible foundation of the unity of the Church, is emphasized, using the symbol of the chair.
Very significant is the phrase taken from the gospel: "You are Peter and on this stone I will build my Church".
