Giulianova (Abruzzo): what to see

post-title

What to see in Giulianuova, a tourist resort which, located in Abruzzo between the peaks of the Gran Sasso and the Adriatic coast, offers the opportunity to spend holidays by the sea or in the mountains.

Tourist information

Composed of two distinct urban agglomerations, Giulianuova has the historic center located inland and extended to the slopes of the hill, while the Lido is instead located along the coast.

For those who prefer a beach holiday, Giulianova offers a beautiful sandy beach that stretches for about two kilometers, with a promenade behind it equipped with a comfortable cycle path and various hotel facilities.

In the historic center there are monuments that narrate the history of the area, including the Cathedral of San Flaviano, built in the fifteenth century in the same spot where an ancient temple once stood, which has an octagonal shape and is dominated by a hemispherical dome.

In the crypt, located below the church, the remains of San Flaviano are preserved.

What see

The Church of Santa Maria a mare, dating back to the 10th century and restored following the considerable damage suffered during the Second World War, has a beautiful, finely worked portal.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore, a place of pilgrimage since the second half of the sixteenth century, is instead a beautiful monumental complex.

Legend has it that on April 22, 1557 the Madonna appeared very bright on an olive tree in Bertolino, a humble farmer from Cologna intent on collecting wood, near the place where the place of worship was later erected.

Another religious building to visit is the Church of Sant'Anna which, although contained in size, has a considerable architectural interest, being a remarkable example of what was the typical vernacular architecture of Abruzzo.

In the surroundings of Giulianova it is possible to visit spectacular natural caves, including the Cavallone caves, the Stiffe caves, where a river flows, and the Beatrice Cenci caves, where artisanal objects dating back to the Stone Age were found.
