post-title

The Saint of the day January 14 is San Felice da Nola, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

San Felice da Nola

Felice da Nola falls into that category of saints of which only scarce historical sources exist.

What is known about him is mainly due to San Paolino di Nola bishop, who dedicated 14 of his Christmas carmina written from 395 to 409 to San Felice when he arrived in Nola and Cimitile.

According to this source Felice was born in Nola in the second half of the third century, after his father had moved to Italy for work.

Brother Ermia embarked on a military career, while Felix chose the path of consecration to God by becoming a priest.

Don Felice became a close collaborator of Massimo, bishop of Nola who, during the last Christian persecution, abandoned Nola to find shelter in a deserted place, giving the assignment to Felice to succeed him in the leadership of the diocese.

But Felice was put in prison and tortured, before being miraculously freed by an angel who took him to the deserted place where the old Bishop Massimo had been reduced to death by hardship and suffering.

Felice took care of Massimo, relieving him by making him drink some miraculous grape juice, this led him back to Nola carrying him on his shoulders and entrusted him to the care of a good Christian woman in old age.

When the persecutions were suspended, Felice resumed his priestly ministry until a new start.

To escape capture, Felice took refuge in a dried-up cistern, where for a semester he was fed, without being recognized, by a charitable woman.

In 313 with the peace of Constantine the persecutions definitively ceased and Felice was able to return to Nola where, having died the Bishop Massimo, he was candidate for his succession.

Felice declined the proposal, making the name of the priest Quinto to be appointed in his place, he also renounced the assets that had been seized from him and spent the rest of his life in poverty.

Although San Felice was not assassinated, he was recognized as a martyr taking into account the numerous sufferings he had to undergo during his existence.

His body was buried at the early Christian basilicas of Cimitile, his tomb was called "Ara Veritatis", since it was attributed particular efficacy against false testimony.

Two feasts with processions are dedicated to the patron saint of Cimitile on January 5 and January 14, the latter day of his feast according to the liturgical calendar.

The first procession starts from the ancient sepulcher located in the area of the early Christian basilicas and ends in the parish church of San Felice in Pincis, while the second procession runs through the streets of the town of Cimitile.
