Saints Timothy and Titus

Bishops of the earliest Christian generations, both converted from Saint Paul and his collaborators, Timothy and Titus were not Israelites, they did not belong to the chosen people.

For this reason, both embodied the first major problem encountered by the nascent Christian Church, consisting of the question whether the pagans could be baptized directly or whether baptism should be reserved only for those who were circumcised.

Timothy was the son of an Israelite woman and a pagan father.

To respect his father, the mother had given up making him circumcise.

When St. Paul arrived in Asia Minor near Listria, after converting his mother, he baptized his son.

Titus was one of those pagans of Syria who, after being converted from St. Paul, had joined the Church of Antioch.

Fourteen years later Paul took him to Jerusalem, firmly opposing his circumcision.

In this way Titus became the living symbol of the universal value of Christianity, without distinctions of nationality, race and culture.

Instead, San Paolo's behavior towards Timothy was different.

When she met him after a few years had passed, she suggested that he be circumcised.

This seemed apparently at odds with his principles, but evidently Paul wanted to make Timothy a missionary to the Jews.

Timothy thus became one of the best and most assiduous collaborators of Paul, docile and affectionate, thoughtful and faithful.

And very useful collaborator of Paolo was also Tito, eloquent and inspired, as well as zealous and irreproachable.

Timothy and Titus were bearers of Saint Paul's letters to the various Christian communities.
