January 6: saint of the day, name day

post-title

The Saint of the day January 6 is Epiphany of the Lord, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

Epiphany of the Lord

On this date we celebrate the manifestation of Jesus as the Son of God to all peoples, or the universality of the Church which assumes in itself the call of pagans to the Faith.

St. Matthew, in describing the event, underlines how they came to Jerusalem following a star, sighted in its rising and interpreted as a sign of the birth of the King announced by the prophets, that is, of the Messiah.

Having arrived, however, in Jerusalem, the Magi needed the indications of the priests and scribes to know exactly the place where they had to go, or Bethlehem, the city of David.

The star and the Holy Scriptures were the two lights that guided the path of the Magi, who appear to humanity as models of authentic seekers of truth.

The three kings were wise men, who scrutinized the stars and knew the history of peoples, moreover they were men of science in a broad sense, with the ability to observe the cosmos and consider it as a great book full of divine signs and messages reserved for human beings.

So their knowledge, far from being self-sufficient, was open to further divine revelations and appeals.

In fact, they are not ashamed to ask the Jewish religious leaders for instructions.

As the passage of the Gospel according to Matthew says: "The Magi came from east to Jerusalem and said: where is he who was born, the king of the Jews? We saw his star appear and we came to worship him ... and behold, the star they had seen came before them, until he came and stopped above the place where the child was. On seeing the star, they felt a great joy. Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, prostrated themselves and adored him. Then they opened their caskets and offered him gold, frankincense and myrrh as a gift. "

The offering of gifts carries within itself a profound meaning: gold indicates the kingship of Jesus, incense reminds of His divinity, myrrh, used in the preparation of bodies for burial, refers to the atonement of sins through the death of Jesus.
