San Adriano

Saint Adrian III, born in Rome and died in Spina Lamberti in September 885, was bishop of Rome and Italian pope from the year 884 until the date of his death.

He is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church. He was born in Rome to a family considered related to the counts of Tusculum, probably the son of Benedetto magnus tusculanus.

If this is true, he would have been the older brother of Sergio dei Conti di Tuscolo, that is, of Pope Sergio III. He was elected Pope on May 17, 884, but his pontificate was short and took place in a troubled period.

In September of 885, while he was going to the Diet of Worms, following the convocation of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles III the Great, with the aim of establishing succession to the Holy Roman Empire and to discuss the growing power of the Saracens, while crossing the Wilzacara forest, the area corresponding today to via Viazza near San Cesario sul Panaro, he was seized with illness and was urgently transported to the hospice of Sant'Alberga where he then died on 8 July 885.

His body was brought to the Abbey of Nonantola where his grave is still found today.
