San Barnaba

Born with the name of Joseph, Barnabas was a Jewish descendant of a Levitic family who emigrated to Cyprus and this very origin suggests a constant presence in Jerusalem.

According to what was narrated in the Acts of the Apostles, Joseph converted to Christianity shortly after the Pentecost episode had occurred.

Following the change in his lifestyle, he decided to sell all his material goods and to donate the proceeds to the Christian Church that had just arisen.

Once baptized, his name was changed to Barnaba, which means "son of consolation".

Among other things, it was Barabbas who, having assumed an important role in the first Christian community, became the guarantor of Saul of Tarsus, who had converted to Christianity as a persecutor with the famous episode in which he fell from a horse near Damascus and who later Paul will be called.

According to some Byzantine catalogs, Barnaba first arrived in Rome, together with Pietro, later moving to the north of Italy, to get to found the Church of Milan.

A Milanese legend tells that, arrived in Milan on March 13, 53, while passing the snow that surrounded him disappeared, giving way to the first spring flowers.

According to the tradition Barnabas continued his travels and his preachings up to Salamis, where he was stoned by some Jews.

For centuries, March 13 has been celebrating spring in his honor, with abstention from work from 1396, subsequently confirmed by Carlo Borromeo in 1583.
