Lombardy: what to see in the land of the Lombards

post-title

What to see in Lombardy and useful information regarding the origin of the name, territory, art and landscapes of this region of northern Italy.

Tourist information

The Lombardy region is part of northern Italy and is bordered by Switzerland, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto.

The name Lombardia, of Byzantine origin, derives from the Germanic people of the Lombards, who made this land the centerpiece of their kingdom.

Its territory includes in the northern part the central section of the Alps, formed by the Lepontine and Rhaetian Alps, followed further south by the Prealps and the hills.

In the remaining southern half of Lombardy, the Po Valley extends, with the exception of the Oltrepò Pavese area, in the extreme southwest of the region, where there are reliefs from the Apennines.

What see

Lombardy offers very attractive landscapes, starting from its mountains with the famous ski areas of Valcamonica and Valtellina, the Stelvio glacier, the Adamello peaks and the wonderful lakes, such as Lake Garda, Lake Como, the Lake Maggiore and Lake Iseo, which together with the suggestive villages that frame them, show all their beauty.

The natural wealth of this region is joined by the important artistic and architectural heritage, which has come to us through centuries of history.

Milan, the capital, and the other cities, Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Lodi, Mantua, Monza, Pavia, Sondrio, Varese, boast a rich heritage of art and culture.
