Saint John of God

Born in 1495 in Montemoro Novo in Portugal, not far from Lisbon, Giovanni had done everything in his life, from the soldier to the street vendor until he became, around forty years, a shopkeeper for books and sacred images in Granada.

In 1537, a preaching friar awakened in him the vocation to heroic charity.

Having disposed of all his possessions, distributing them to the poor, and manifesting his faith in a manner deemed excessive, they took him for mad and locked him in a hospital, where he could learn about the sad reality of the hospitalized, abandoned and marginalized.

In that hospital Giovanni understood that his mission was to create a place where real assistance to the needy was guaranteed and that it was based on love and charity, as well as a healthy environment where the strictest hygiene standards and staff were respected was equipped with the necessary expertise.

So he decided to consecrate his life to the service of the sick, founding the first hospital in Granada in 1539.

He died on March 8, 1550.

In 1630 he was beatified by Pope Urban VII, in 1690 he was made a saint under the pontificate of Pope Alexander VIII.

Between the late 1800s and early 1900s he was proclaimed patron of the sick, hospitals, nurses and their associations, and was also declared patron of Granada.
