Maryland, located in the northeastern United States, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is one of the states belonging to the federation of the United States of America that falls within the South Atlantic, a macro-region that includes, in addition to Maryland, also Delaware, the Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
It should be remembered that Maryland, along with 12 other colonies, started the American revolution by rebelling against the British government.
The economy of the whole state focuses particularly on services and draws a lot of influence from the favorable geographical location.
Among the important activities there is that of transport which refers to the port of Baltimore, which is among the largest in the USA, from where various semi-finished products enter together with numerous raw materials which are then transported by land to the factories located in the Midwest. .
The proximity to the federal capital Washington has favored the establishment of various government institutions, located mainly in the suburban areas of Washington and Baltimore, and the development of industrial activities related to defense, the aerospace sector and biomedical research of Johns Hopkins University.
Fishing is also very developed, practiced mainly in the Chesapeake bay, famous above all for a significant catch of blue crab, oysters and perch.
There is no shortage of fertile land in Maryland, located mainly along the coastal area and at the foot of the mountains, exploited largely for the breeding of cattle, used for the production of milk and dairy products, and for the cultivation of vegetables.
The fairly warm climate of the southern counties allows commercial cultivation of tobacco. The industries are of various types and embrace various sectors, the main ones being the food, electronics, chemical and steel industries.
In the western part of the state some coal deposits are located while in the eastern part there are numerous sandstone quarries and building stones including brownstone stone widely used in construction since the second half of the nineteenth century.

Most of the state's administrative functions are performed in the capital Annapolis which is the county seat of Anne Arundel county.

With a population of 36,217, Annapolis belongs to the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and is located on the Severn River not far from Chesapeake Bay where the waterway flows.
The United States Naval Academy and St. John's College are located in this city.
