Massa Lubrense (Campania): what to see

post-title

What to see in Massa Lubrense, itinerary including the main places of interest, with the best beaches and excursions to do in the surrounding area.

Tourist information

Located at the junction point between the Sorrento coast and the Amalfi coast, which coincides with the one where Punta della Campanella extends into the sea, a short distance from the island of Capri, Massa Lubrense is developed on a vast territory, formed by the grouping of eighteen villages, each corresponding to an ancient farmhouse.

The center of the town is Largo Vescovado, a suggestive terrace overlooking the sea comprising the sixteenth century church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the eighteenth century Bishop's palace.

From this place starts a network of paths and streets that wind through the green yellow of the lemon groves and the gray green of the olive groves, or, in other cases, which pass through chestnut and oak woods, arriving at ancient farmhouses and large uninhabited areas, characterized from a thick Mediterranean scrub, limestone walls overlooking the sea, archaeological remains, Saracen towers, unique panoramas that embrace the sea and the mountains, giving wonderful views of the Lattari Mountains and the gulfs of Naples and Sorrento, including the islands and rocks that they are part of.

Inhabited since ancient times, Massa Lubrense in pre-Roman times suffered from Greek influence, as evidenced by the Athenaion located in Punta della Campanella, a large temple where the cult of Athena was celebrated.

Destroyed by the Angevins, Massa Lubrense was rebuilt and then razed to the ground again under the mandate of Ferrante d’Aragona.

In the sixteenth century the town returned to new life, until the devastation put in place by the Turks, following which defensive works were increased and watchtowers built along the coast.

What see

Nerano beach, located in the homonymous hamlet of Massa Lubrense, is made up of pebbles and gravel, characterized by rocky bottoms and clear water.

The beach of the Germans, so called because of the high influx of tourism from Germany, has a bathing establishment and can be reached via a staircase, going directly down the coastal road.

Continuing to find the beach of Calcara, bordered by a group of rocks among which the rock of the Pass is the largest, and the beach of Marina del Cantone, renowned for its particular beauty, due to the presence of white and smooth pebbles.

Thanks to the excellent climatic conditions and the good offer of accommodation facilities, tourism has become, in recent decades, a very important voice in the economy of the town, adding to the traditional sectors of the local economy, long represented by agriculture, fishing and crafts.
