November 20: saint of the day, name day

post-title

The Saint of the 20 November is San Edmondo, which name day is celebrated and other saints are celebrated on this date.

San Edmondo

Born in about 840, Edmondo became king in 855 when he was still only a boy.

He was crowned in Burna, a city corresponding with good approximation to the current Bures Saint Mary in Suffolk and which had the role of capital of the kingdom of East Anglia.

Almost nothing is known about Edmondo's life after his coronation.

England at that time was continually attacked by the Nordic peoples who landed on the coast making raids and looting wherever they passed.

The Dani, one of these peoples, carried out most of the looting between 866 and 870, the year in which, after wintering in York, they headed towards East Anglia crossing Mercia and setting up their camps near Thetford .

King Edmund had the courage to challenge him in battle, despite having an inferior army at his disposal, but the Dani had the best and killed him, remaining undisturbed masters of the battlefield.

The chronicle of Abbone of Fleury places the martyrdom of Edmondo next to that of San Sebastiano.

In fact, he refused to give in to the wishes of the Dani, that is, he did not agree to deny the Catholic religion in exchange for their pagan gods, thus being cruelly tortured before being killed by the enemy's arrows.

Edmondo's body was buried in Beadoriceworth, corresponding to the current Bury Saint Edmunds.

His grave quickly became one of the best known in England and the saint's reputation crossed the borders of the kingdom spreading to the rest of Europe.

Although the date of his canonization is unknown, there are churches dedicated to him throughout England.

The memory of San Edmondo, who was a just and martyred King for his people, has remained more alive in the people than in historical documents.

Tradition says that during his reign he had the habit of withdrawing, directly from the royal pantries, food and goods to be donated to his subjects to help them better cope with the harsh English winters.

This charitable behavior explains the reason why San Edmondo is considered by many to be the patron of gifts.
