Sant'Ernesto
Ernesto of Zwiefalten, was a Benedictine abbot in the Abbey of Zwiefalten near Reutlingen in present-day Baden Wurttemberg in Germany.
Little information has been received about Ernesto, we know that he was born in Steiblingen and that he became abbot in the Benedictine abbey of Zwiefalten, a monastery in Wurttemberg founded by the counts Kuno and Liutold of Achalm in 1089.
In 1146 he abandoned the hermitage to join the second crusade of Bishop Otto of Freising, led by the king of Germany Corrado III Hoenstaufen of Swabia, to go to defend the sacred places where Jesus lived and the pilgrims who were attacked and massacred by Muslims, who by any means they wanted to eliminate the Christian presence from those territories.
Ernestro exercised his preaching in Persia and Arabia in an attempt to convert Muslims, but was captured by them and taken to Mecca where, after being tortured, he was killed in 1148.
In the abbey church of Zwiefalten, a statue of Ernesto is preserved on the altar dedicated to Saint Stephen, as well as two paintings that represent it.
