Phrases of Santa Brigida

- Now, I am the Virgin (Mary) who assists above the world in constant prayer, like on the clouds of the rainbow that seems to stretch towards the earth and touch it with the extremities. The rainbow is me, I who, through prayer, bend and stoop towards the inhabitants of the earth, both good and bad. I lean towards the good ones, so that they are firm and constant in the things commanded by the Holy Church, and towards the bad ones so that they do not advance in their wickedness.

- The Virgin Mary says to Saint Brigida: You are used to giving something to those who come to you with a pure and clean bag, and to judge unworthy to receive something from you whoever does not want to open or clean his bag full of mud and dirt. The same happens in the spiritual life: when the will does not intend to abandon its offenses, justice does not want it to enjoy the influence of the Holy Spirit; and when a person lacks the will to correct his life, he does not deserve the food of the Holy Spirit, whether it be a king, an emperor, a priest, a poor man or a rich man.

- The three things that arouse love are: pray to God to help us; pray to him to free us from pernicious delights and pray to him to give us the will to please him in everything; in fact, divine love is not obtained if it is not desired and this desire is not sensible if it is not founded in God.

- The Son of God speaks: the house in which there is a fire must have an opening, so that the smoke comes out and those who live there enjoy the warmth of the hearth without inconveniences. Similarly, it is useful for those who wish to keep my Holy Spirit and my grace to confess frequently, so that the smoke of their sins evaporates.

- Spiritual consolation is an infusion of the Holy Spirit, it consists of considering the greatness of God's works and admiring his patience and feeling it when all these things are done with pleasure through the works. Spiritual tribulation is the evil, unclean and excessively importunate thoughts that creep into the spirit; it is the spirit distressed by dishonor towards God and by the sin of souls; the spirit forced to fall into the duties of the world.

- Man must not do anything to acquire honors or to be praised by his fellow men: driven by love, he must act to have an eternal reward.

- Jesus said to Santa Brigida: I have two arms: with one I embrace the sky and all that it contains, with the other the earth and the sea. I open the first to my chosen ones, honoring them and consoling them on earth and in heaven. I lay the other on human evil, submitting them with mercy and placing them so that not all the desired sea appears. So, do not be afraid, especially since no one will be able to defame my words, they, indeed, will reach places and nations that I like.

- If man had only the soul and not the body he could not, with such ease and sublimity, deserve such a high good, because he would not have to endure physical suffering, so that man could obtain eternal goods and honor of heaven, the body has been joined to the soul.

- The Roman curia does not want sheep without wool: listen to those who give, to those who do not give greenhouse the door in the face.

- Just as stars are never without brightness, in the same way, good Angels, similar to stars, are never without light, that is, the Holy Spirit, because all they have, they received it from God for love which warm and shine through its light. These angels are always linked to God and conform entirely to his will and desire nothing but him; therefore they burn and are pure and clear.
