Poppi (Tuscany): what to see

post-title

What to see in Poppi, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Conti Guidi Castle, Abbey of San Fedele and Madonna del Morbo.

Tourist information

Medieval village of the Casentino, dominated by the Castello dei Conti Guidi which stands on the top of the hill, Poppi has an interesting historic center, where Via Cavour, the main road, is lined with arcades and remarkable buildings.

The Abbey of San Fedele, built in the eleventh century in Romanesque style, was built on commission from the Guidi Counts for the Benedictine monks, who later adopted the rule of the Vallombrosans.

The Oratorio della Madonna del Morbo overlooks Piazza Amerighi, an octagonal church with a front porch, which is one of the few examples of a Tuscan baroque.

This place of worship was built in the seventeenth century by the inhabitants of Poppi, as a thank you to Our Lady for having escaped the danger following a plague epidemic.

What see

Inside there is a panel depicting the Madonna and Child with San Giovannino, a work attributed to the school of Fra Filippino.

The Castle was renovated in the thirteenth century by Simone Guidi Conte di Battifolle, on a project by the architect Lapo di Cambio.

The magnificent stone staircase dates back to 1470.

The Castle houses inside the Rilliana Library, the most important part of which is represented by a collection of manuscripts, documents printed with movable type technology and other publications of exceptional value, donated in 1825 by Count Fabrizio Rilli Orsini to the community of Poppi.
