Located in the province of Modena in the Parco del Frignano and located south of the capital, Sestola is dominated by Monte Cimone, with its 2165 meters above sea level.

It is also the most famous tourist resort in Emilia-Romagna, ideal for summer and winter holidays, thanks to the presence in the area of ​​the Monte Cimone ski resort, which is among the largest in the Apennines.


The historic center is dominated by the Castle, a fortress dating back to the eighth century but later remodeled, which houses a museum dedicated to mechanical musical instruments and mountain culture.

The fortress was the seat of the governorate concerning the Frignano area, at the time of the domination of the Este family.

The defensive apparatus is characterized by sixteenth-century walls surrounding the complex, which can be accessed through three doors.


The whole area is divided into two parts, the Borgo and the Rocca.

The Borgo includes military and service buildings, including the quarters of the soldiers, the prisons, the Palazzina del Comandante and the oratory, while della Rocca, equipped with a Clock Tower from 1572, was part of the government and administrative structures .

What see

Among the places to visit include the churches of the Madonna del Rosario, San Nicolò and the Oratory of Sant'Antonio, all from the seventeenth century and containing works of art, paintings, valuable altars and precious objects.


In the center there is the fountain of 1600, covered by a nineteenth-century arcade with arches resting on columns made of sandstone.

The Passo del Lupo is located in the surroundings of Sestola, where there are ski lifts and numerous ski slopes.

Going up to 1,500 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Cimone, you will find Lake Ninfa, the starting point for hiking in summer and for cross-country and alpine skiing in winter.
