Suvereto (Tuscany): what to see

post-title

What to see in Suvereto, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Rocca Aldobrandesca, San Giusto Church and Fonte degli Angeli.

Tourist information

Classified among the most beautiful villages in Italy, Suvereto is located in the Val di Cornia, a splendid area near the sea, rich in cork oaks, from which the name of the village derives, and characterized by a hilly landscape with centuries-old olive groves and fine vineyards .

The suggestive village, surrounded by ancient walls, contains monuments of particular historical and artistic interest, starting with the fortress, built by the Aldobrandeschi in a dominant position towards the second half of the twelfth century.

The Town Hall, built starting from the thirteenth century, is surmounted by a tower, once called "of the bell", as it was used to gather the assembly of the Elders of the free municipality.

The Church of San Giusto Vescovo, built on previous paleochristian structures in the period between the ninth and twelfth centuries, and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, which houses the Museum of Sacred Art, represent excellent examples of buildings dedicated to worship.

What see

The Convent of San Francesco, although it has been transformed into private homes, retains traces of its history and, in its still intact Cloister, concerts and shows are held periodically.

This convent was built in the twelfth century on land donated by the Aldobrandeschi family.

Near the convent of San Francesco stands the Church of the Most Holy Crucifix, dating from the sixteenth century, worthy of note also the Church of the Madonna di Sopra la Porta, where there is a painting depicting the Immaculate Madonna with the Child, from the sixteenth century.

Not far from the town is the ancient Fonte degli Angeli, restored in the sixteenth century, which in the past was one of the main sources of water supply for the inhabitants.
