Tricesimo (Friuli Venezia Giulia): what to see

post-title

What to see in Tricesimo, a one-day itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Purificazione and the sixteenth-century Valentinis Castle built in medieval forms.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Udine, from which it is 12 km going north, Tricesimo is a town of Roman origin, located on the Via Julia Augusta, belonging in medieval times to the patriarch of Aquileia.

Contested for a long time between Udine and the counts of Gorizia, it was devastated in the fifteenth century, undergoing in the following centuries the dominations of various lordships, including that of the Pampreno and that of the Valentinis.

The Cathedral, also called Pieve di Santa Maria della purificazione and dedicated to the Madonna, rebuilt in the eighteenth century by Schiavi, has on the south side a remarkable marble portal, built by Bernardino da Bissone in 1505, while inside it preserves a valuable altarpiece, depicting Purification, the work of Jacopo Palma the Younger.

What see

The portal of Bissone was originally located on the facade of the previous Gothic church.

When the church was enlarged in the eighteenth century, this portal was considered disproportionate in that position and was moved to the south side, taking on the role of a side door, while an elegant Renaissance portal was inserted on the facade.

On that occasion, a Madonna and Child, a masterpiece by the same author, was placed on that occasion, together with the two statues inserted in the niches of the current facade, depicting the Annunciation.

Valentinis Castle, located on a hill, is a 16th century reconstruction relating to a medieval fortress.
