post-title

What to see in Viana do Castelo, attractions and places to visit in this ancient town of Porgallo, where there are monuments and interesting places, including the Basilica Santa Luzia.

Tourist information

Located near the mouth of the Lima River in Portugal, Viana Do Castelo was an important seaport at the time of the major discoveries.

There are many ancestral houses that testify to the glorious time that passed until the loss of Brazil as a colony marked the beginning of a period of decline.

In the center of Viana do Castello there are various monuments and places to visit.

Piazza della Repubblica boasts a magnificent Renaissance fountain, then there are the Council Palaces, the Misericordia hospital and the church of the same name.

From the square you can also see the Sè, or the cathedral of Viana Do Castelo, in Gothic style and with a beautiful representation of the baptism of Jesus.

What see

Piazza de Erva, a typical example of Manueline art, preserves the ancient hospital where pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela were hospitalized.

The municipal museum of Viana Do Castello is also very interesting and is currently located inside a historic building.

In this museum the past riches of the city are remembered and there are rooms dedicated to the folklore of the region, to ceramics and Portuguese painting.

From the Basilica Santa Luzia, located on the homonymous mountain, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Viana Do Castelo as well as the mouth of the Lima river.

This basilica dates back to 1903 and is accessible by taking a cable car near the train station. It should be noted that the remains of an ancient pre-Roman castro are also nearby.
