Weikersheim (Germany): what to see

post-title

What to see in Weikersheim, an ancient center on the Via Romantica, an itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest worthy of attention.

Tourist information

Former residence of counts and powerful lords, Weikersheim passed on to the princes of Hohenlohe, who adapted the city center to their castle.

The Market Square is delimited to the east by the neo-Gothic Parish Church of 1419, while in the southern and northern part it is flanked by Baroque houses.

The low circular houses, once inhabited by the castle staff, which in the center leave the entrance to the castle free, are connected to them in a semicircle.

Passing through a door in the low stables and crossing the eastern wing, you reach the courtyard of the castle with its medieval watchtower.

It is worth noting the precious furnishings entirely preserved, largely from the 18th century, the sumptuous stucco rooms and the knights' room in the south wing.

It occupies two floors of the Renaissance construction of the 1600s and was considered to be one of the largest and most beautiful of the times.

The grandiose coffered ceiling is fixed to the attic with chains and painted with lively hunting scenes, while the walls are decorated with precious paintings and pictorial landscape scenes, ornaments and incredible wild animals.

The effect of the stuccos on the fireplace and on the door is impressive, with the bas-relief of a battle against the Turks, on the smaller sides of the hall.

What see

A portion of the castle is currently used as a branch of the Regional Museum of Wurttemberg. Annually young German musicians gather here to attend courses, concerts and operas.

Walking through the park, the visitor is brought back to the Baroque times from the paths and flower beds with geometric structure, as well as from numerous statues of classical antiquity and eighteenth-century court life.

At the center of the semicircular colonnade was once the equestrian stature of Count Carlo Lodovico. Opposing the pomp of the court, the Tauber Museum displays rural appliances and furnishings.

In the Forest Museum of the Karlsberg Castle, it is possible to follow the development of the baroque hunting of the times up to the modern forest sciences. The complex includes a park dedicated to game and free time.

Weikersheim also offers numerous other recreational possibilities for active holidays.

A detour of approximately 5 km leads to the Laudenbach district, where you can visit an interesting fifteenth-century Gothic chapel.

Even if subsequently remodeled, it is advisable to visit this small building, to take a look at its furnishings, which includes the alabaster sepulchral monument of Marshal Melchior Von Hatzfeld located in the crypt.
