Definition of philanthropy and what it means to philanthropist, etymology of the term and loving attitude towards other people.

Meaning of philanthropist

A philanthropist is defined as someone who works generously, with altruism and love of neighbor, to bring good to people who need help.

The term philanthropy, originates from the Greek filìa, which means love, and anthropos, which means man, represents a sentiment aimed at the good, which is identified with free love towards one's neighbor, characterized by an extreme work of generosity without profit.

This word was originally used by the Circolo degli Scipioni in the second century BC, a group formed by Roman citizens, to indicate a preference for discussing philosophical and literary subjects.

But in the following century Cicero changed its meaning, giving philanthropy a definition similar to the current one, identifying it with a pure feeling of generosity and immense sensitivity.

Starting from the coming of Christianity, Christian charity was clearly distinguished from philanthropy, which sees the first coming directly from the love of God towards man, who can in turn turn his love towards his neighbor, as well as with gifts materials, including money, especially with the physical presence and the testimony of a living faith in God.
