Tourist information

Located in the province of Ferrara, Argenta was founded by Esuperanzio, bishop of Ravenna, along the right bank of the Po river, near the Pieve di San Giorgio, which represents the oldest place of worship in the area, located about a kilometer away from the centre.

Argenta was the first Byzantine stronghold and later became a territory dominated by the Este family, before moving to the Papal States in 1598.

Among the main places to visit include the Church of San Giovanni, where there is an interesting oratory of the seventeenth century, and the Church of San Lorenzo, which contains inside a painting by Dosso Dossi.

La Chiesa della Celletta is located on the edge of the town of Argenta, on the state road 16 Adriatica in the direction of Ravenna.

Its origins date back to 1490, when a small temple called Celletta was built, by the vote of an inhabitant, not far from the Po di Primaro.

What see

The current church dates back to 1606, built to accommodate the greatest number of faithful who came on pilgrimage following a prodigious apparition of the Virgin Mary.

The design of the building was initially dealt with by Marco Nicolò Balestri then, once dead, was completed by the architect Aleotti.

Characterized by an elliptical plan and classic style decorative elements, the place of worship, after suffering serious damage in 1945, was restored in 1954.

The painting by Garofalo, which was located inside the Celletta Church, is kept in the Civic Museum.

In the surroundings of Argenta there is the oasis of the Campotto valleys, also known as the Argenta and Marmorta valleys, where there is the parish church of San Giorgio, dating back to the sixth century and featuring a valuable portal from 1122.
