Located along the left bank of the Lauch river and symbolically defined as the capital of wine in Alsace, Colmar has kept intact the relevant architectural value of the buildings and the original footprint as a whole.

Economically it is home to a lively textile, food, chemical, mechanical and tobacco industry.


In Colmar, an important cultural center, there are numerous works of art including the Schongauer Museum, the Church of the Dominican Monastery, the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin, including four large portals and inside the eighteenth-century organ created by Johann Andreas Silbermann .

The Unterlinden Museum, dedicated to the typical art of this region, contains medieval paintings and sculptures, including the famous Issenheim altarpiece, created by Mathias Grunewald.

What see

Very picturesque is the Little Venice district, with the houses located along the banks of the river and reachable along the Rue des Tanneurs or crossing the bridge over the Lauch river.


A copy of the statue of liberty in New York, later made by Gustave Eiffel, has been located at the north entrance of the city since 4 July 2004 when it was placed there in honor of the centenary of the death of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who had designed it.

Also interesting is the Bartholdi Museum, dedicated to this local sculptor and patriot, which is located in the center of Colmar inside the birthplace of Bartholdi, still furnished with original furniture, where a collection of models, sculptures, paintings and drawings are kept made by the artist.

The characteristic district of the tanners is worth a visit, with the typical houses where the hides were dried before processing.

Rue de Marchands is instead known for the beautiful houses that overlook it, including the 1537 Pfister residence, with a lovely wooden gallery and adorned with an angular bay window.

In August, the wine fair is held in Colmar.
