Sant'Etelberto

St Ethelbert died on February 24 616.

He was king of Kent, England, and the first English ruler to convert to Christianity.

He ruled wisely and balanced for over 50 years.

Etelberto married Bertha, the Christian daughter of Charibert, king of the Franks, thus building an alliance with the most powerful state in contemporary western Europe.

When Pope Gregory I sent Augustine, Benedictine abbot to Rome, as a missionary to England, together with a delegation of monks, Etelberto allowed them to settle in Canterbury and to preach freely.

He converted to Christianity and donated land to Augustine to build the episcopal see of Canterbury.

Thanks to the support and help of the kings of Kent, St. Augustine of Canterbury, he was able to start the Christianization of England.
