Tourist information

Wandering through the Garfagnana is very interesting, both for visiting the main centers and for hiking, along the numerous paths in contact with nature.

Garfagnana is a geographical area of the province of Lucca, extended between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, bordering the provinces of Massa Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Florence and to the north with Emilia Romagna.

The Serchio river crosses it and the landscape, of remarkable beauty, is characterized by woods and mountains to be covered on foot, through innumerable trekking paths of remarkable naturalistic impact.

The mountain range of the Apuan Alps, which takes its name from the original people of the Apuans, is located in the northern part of Tuscany, around it are the rivers Magra and Serchio, the Riviera of Versilia and the valleys of Lunigiana and Garfagnana.

What see

The Apuan Alps characterize the landscape of the Garfagnana and cross it entirely.

They have a very crystallized karst structure, which has made them famous all over the world, especially for the extraction of the famous Carrara marble, material used for centuries for the construction of important monuments and sculptures.

The Serchio, formerly called Auser, descends from the slopes of Mount Sillano, covering the Garfagnana from North to South up to Castelnuovo from where, continuing through the area called Media Valle, where the villages of Barga and Borgo a Mozzano are located, it reaches Lucca and subsequently it flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea in Marina di Vecchiano.

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is the main center of the area, followed by Camporgiano, Gallicano, Castiglione, Pieve Fosciana, Minucciano, Piazza al Serchio and Villa Collemandina.

Castelnuovo is about 45 kilometers from Lucca and just as many from Forte dei Marmi, which can be reached along the via di Arni, passing through the rocky Galleria del Cipollaio.
