San Medardo
Born in Salency indefinitely and died in Noyon on June 8, 560, Medardo was the son of Nectar, one of the Frankish nobles who played a role in the conquest of Gaul, and of Protagia, a woman belonging to a Gallo-Roman family who had to convert to Christianity in order to marry.
After completing his studies to become a priest, in 530 Medardo became first bishop of Tournai and after of Noyon, unifying the two dioceses in 534 and remaining in office until 545.
Medardo played a fundamental role in spreading the Gospel in France, at the time of the bishopric the most relevant episode concerning the life of Medardo dates back, which is the one in which Queen Radegonda, after her husband Clotario I, then king of the Franks, he had his brother assassinated, he ran away from the Court, going to seek shelter from Medardo.
Bishop Medardo welcomed her without hesitation, consecrating her as deaconess at her explicit request.
Contrary to expectations, from that moment on the king always showed considerable admiration for Medardo, to the point that on his death in 560, he had him buried in the capital Soissons, where the abbey of San Medardo was later built.
San Medardo is patron of Arcevia in the province of Ancona, where the only Italian pictorial representation of the Saint is found, included in a polyptych by Luca Signorelli, commonly known as the Polyptych of San Medardo.
