post-title

What to see in Lower Normandy, administrative departments, monuments and places of interest, including the landing beach and Mont Saint Michel.

Tourist information

Lower Normandy is a land of northern France characterized by verdant landscapes with meadows and apple orchards in the Pays d’Auge, forests and marshes in the Cotentin peninsula, cows, cliffs and sandy beaches along the coast.

It borders the regions of Upper Normandy, Center, the Pays de la Loire and Brittany.

It was on the coasts of this region that on June 6, 1944 allied forces landed against Nazi Germany.

Lower Normandy is divided into the three departments of Calvados, Manche and Orne, the coasts are low and sandy, in correspondence with Mont Saint Michel, high and rocky continuing northwards along the Cotentin peninsula.

What see

To see the Moint Saint Michel rocky islet at the mouth of the Couesnon river where there is the sanctuary which was built in honor of Archangel Michael.

The splendid architecture of this building and the bay where it is located make it one of the most popular places in Normandy thanks to the phenomenon of the tides.

Caen is the capital of Lower Normandy and the Calvados department, a city largely destroyed during the Second World War, located near the place where the famous Normandy landings took place.

In the reconstruction of Caen in the post-war period, which lasted from 1948 to 1962, large straight streets were built with multi-storey buildings made with local stone, taking great care of the architectural unity of the city.
