San Cataldo di Rachau
Born in Rachau around 615 and died in Taranto on 8 March 685, Cataldo was an Irish monk who became bishop of Taranto when he arrived in Italy.
Son of parents who had become good Christians thanks to the contribution of some missionaries who came from Gaul, love for prayer, obedience to God and superiors was transmitted to Cataldo, in addition to the mortification supported by the spirit of sacrifice.
When he was an orphan, Cataldo donated all his inherited assets to the needy.
First monk, then abbot of a monastery in central Ireland, he became bishop of Raclau and around 666, during a pilgrimage to Holy Land, he later arrived in Italy.
According to tradition, the saint would have landed in Taranto at the behest of God because, while he was prostrated on the Holy Sepulcher during his stay in the Holy Land, Jesus appeared to him who would have invited him to go to Taranto with the aim of proclaiming the gospel in one the finished city now become pagan.
In Taranto he was highly appreciated and well liked by the citizens, who no longer let him go and elected him their bishop, loving him until his death in 685.
