Saints Philip and James the Apostles

Philip and James the Lesser are two apostles who are celebrated on the same date, as their relics were placed simultaneously in the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Rome.

Philip, born in Bethsaida, on the shores of Lake Tiberias, and a disciple of John the Baptist, was among the first to follow Jesus, moreover, according to tradition he announced the Gospel to the people of the Scythians and the Parthians.

According to the most widespread tradition, Filippo died crucified in Geropoli when he was 87 years old.

James the Minor, cousin of Jesus and son of Alphaeus, played an important role in the council of Jerusalem, held around 50, and became head of the city church when James the Greater died.

Minor is said to distinguish him from James the Greater, who was brother of John the Evangelist and son of Zebedee.

When St. Peter was miraculously freed from captivity under the reign of King Herod, he first informed James.

St. Paul, after he had converted, while returning to Jerusalem, stopped at the house of James to receive indications on what to do.

The Jews also held in high esteem James, who became the first Christian bishop of Jerusalem responsible for numerous conversions.

He was the author of the first letter in the New Testament and according to the dubious claims of Giuseppe Flavio he was stoned around the year 65.
