The Saint of the day 21 October is Sant’Orsola and companions, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.
Sant’Orsola and companions
Orsola, daughter of a king of Britain, was a beautiful woman, secretly already consecrated to God.
Aetherius, a pagan king, came forward to marry her, the marriage would serve to avoid a war, for this reason the father felt obliged to grant his consent.
Tradition has it that in order to avoid marriage, this princess had required three years to meditate on it, the conversion of the future husband and a thousand maidservants for himself and for each of his ten companions.
When the eleven thousand girls left for a pilgrimage to Rome, on their return they met martyrdom at the hands of the Huns and Orsola was killed by the same fearsome king Attila, unnecessarily in love with her.
In reality, an inscription from the 4th-5th century in the Cologne Cathedral speaks of only 11 martyrs.
Under his protection, Sant’Angela Merici placed the first female secular order, that of the Ursulines.
