Germano, born in Capua in the fifth century and died in the same city on 30 October 540, is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church and by the other Christian Churches that recognize the cult of saints.

Born into a wealthy family, after the death of his father he disposed of all his belongings to give them to the most needy.

Friend of Saint Benedict, he was elected pope in 516.

Liber pontificalis remembers him as one of the papal legates sent in 519 by Pope Sant'Ormisda to Constantinople in an attempt to resolve the schism of Patriarch Acacio, who had received papal excommunication in 484.

In fact, Acacio had promoted, in 482, a text that wanted to reconcile the monophysite heresy, which attributed to Jesus only the divine nature, contrary to the official theological position of the Catholic Church which recognized instead the coexistence of the divine and human nature in Jesus .

The papal envoys managed to obtain the result of having the Eastern bishops abandon the schism of Acacio, causing them to recognize as valid the thesis put forward by the Catholic Church.

Among these, the episode concerning the release from the purgatory of the deacon Pascasio, who had presented himself to Germano as the custodian of the source of the thermal waters of Agnano where he went to heal, deserves to be mentioned.

Furthermore, upon Germano's death, it is said that San Benedetto had seen angels carrying his soul to heaven.
