Psalm 137: complete, commentary

post-title

CommentPsalm 137 tells the story of a Jew who, returning from exile in Babylon, mentions the sufferings he had suffered during the period in which he was a slave and hopes that Jerusalem will be rebuilt, despite the adversities shown by neighboring populations. He remembers all the humiliations suffered by the exiles, who refused to sing for this, hanging their lyres on the willows, in front of their oppressors.

Psalm 137 complete

[1] On the rivers of Babylon, we sat there weeping at the memory of Zion.

[2] To the willows of that land we hung our lyres.

[3] There those who had deported us, songs of joy, our oppressors asked us to sing: "Sing us the songs of Zion!".

[4] How to sing the songs of the Lord in a foreign land?

[5] If I forget you, Jerusalem, paralyze my right hand;

[6] stick your tongue to my palate, if I drop your memory, if I don't put Jerusalem above all my joy.

[7] Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom, who on the day of Jerusalem said: "Destroy, destroy also its foundations."

[8] Daughter of Babylon devastating, blessed is he who will give you back what you have done to us.

[9] Blessed is he who will grab your little ones and slam them against the stone.
