Basilica Sanctuary of the Consolata

The Sanctuary of the Consolata, located in the historic center of Turin, is dedicated to the Madonnna Consolatrice, who is the patroness of the city of Turin.

It constitutes a cult building with a thousand-year history to which a good part of the citizens are deeply linked.

At the origin of the Church of the Consolata and of the Marian cult there is an image of the Madonna which, since the fifth century, was in a chapel dedicated to Saint Andrew, close to the walls.

At the beginning of the eleventh century, following the arrival of the Benedictine monks who fled the Novalesa Abbey due to the attacks of the Saracens, the Romanesque Church of Sant'Andrea was built on the site of this chapel, including the bell tower, which of this ancient complex it is the only evidence left today.

This Church was located where the vestibule of the current Baroque building is located, which was built from the seventeenth century, with various alterations until the early twentieth century, when the project of the architect Carlo Ceppi gave it the appearance current.

The layout of the building is the work of Guarino Guarini, while the main altar is by Filippo Juvarra.

The tradition according to which the ancient image of the Blessed Virgin of the Consolata, lost during the construction works of the ancient Romanesque church, was found thanks to a vision of a young blind man from Briançon, who digging he found the icon and regained his sight, starting the great devotion to this image of the Madonna, dispenser of graces.

This representation no longer exists today, the painting today revered is a work by Antoniazzo Romano, dating back to the end of the fifteenth century, a gift from Cardinal Della Rovere.

The festival is celebrated on June 20 of each year.
