Santa Chiara di Montefalco

Santa Chiara, born in Montefalco in the province of Perugia in 1268 from a wealthy family, was immediately attracted, as a child, to prayer, the contemplation of the Child Jesus and the via crucis.

At the age of only six he entered the hermitage where his sister Giovanna lived.

When she died her sister was elected abbess and from that moment she became mother and teacher of the Sisters in the convent.

At the beginning of 1294, Christ appeared to her carrying a large cross and told her that if she wanted to be his daughter she would have to die on the cross.

In 1308 the Virgin Mary preceded by angels appeared to Chiara at the point of death and with outstretched arms indicated to the abbess that everything was ready to welcome her among the saints of paradise.

He ceased to live peacefully around nine in the morning on August 17, 1308.

The nuns, wanting to prove that she really had the Lord's Cross engraved in her heart, opened her heart and found the signs of the Passion, or the Crucifix, the flagellum, the column, the crown of thorns, the three nails and the spear, the barrel with the sponge.

The signs of Jesus' passion, in the following days, were examined by civil and religious experts who considered them miraculous.

Its body rests in the church of the Augustinian nuns of Montefalco.
