Located in the province of Bologna, Bazzano is an inland village within the Mountain Community of the Samoggia Valley and with a historic center surrounded by medieval walls with three access doors, including the Clock Tower.

Looking at the village in the context of the landscape, the Rocca dei Bentivoglio, dating back to medieval times but remodeled in 1473, which was the place of captivity for Ugo Foscolo in the year 1799, immediately catches the eye.


Inside the fortification is the "Arsenio Crespellani" Civic Museum, where the archaeological finds found during excavations carried out in the surroundings are kept.

The interior of the museum is divided into various sections, including a pre-protohistoric one, which exhibits objects dating back to the Stone Age, one dedicated to Roman and late ancient finds, and one concerning the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, there are also two the hall of the Cheetahs, which contains objects framed in the period between the Risorgimento and the Second World War, and the hall of the Garlands, where there are finds attributed to the Etruscan necropolis of Casalecchio di Reno.

What see

In the vicinity of the Rocca dei Bentivoglio there is the church of Santo Stefano, which is one of the oldest in Bazzano, containing interesting paintings and sculptures inside.


In the apse it is possible to admire Santo Stefano, a work from 1638 by Simone Cantarini, a pupil of Guido Reni, in the first chapel of the left nave there is instead the Holy Trinity by Gaetano Gandolfi.

In the first chapel of the right nave there is an ancient Crucifix and the sculpture of San Luigi Gonzaga, which in past ages was carried in procession on the day of the feast of the Saint, while in the second chapel there is the Transito di San Giuseppe.

Other masterpieces preserved in the place of worship include the Via Crucis and the wonderful Lamentation over Christ.


Piazza Garibaldi constitutes the center of Bazzano, where the market takes place every Saturday and overlooked by the Town Hall building and the oratory of Santa Maria del Suffragio.

The panoramic staircase of the hundred steps, which connects the historic center to the Rocca dei Bentivoglio, starts from the statue of Giuditta, located in Piazza Garibaldi.
