Meaning of Canyon

The term canyon indicates, in geography, a deep valley with steep walls resulting from erosive phenomena caused by a river or stream that "digs" their bed into rocks with the generation of very narrow valleys.

Some examples of canyons in Italy are the Vajont ravine above the city of Longarone in Veneto and the Pazin gorge in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the Foiba stream with a jump of more than 130 meters sinks along a nearly 20 km long canyon.

Canyon de Chelly is located in northeastern Arizona within the Navajos Indian reservation.

Near the town of Chinle there is the entrance to the park, with a semi-desert and unexpectedly monotonous surrounding area, until you get to see the two magnificent canyons that include, along their walls, numerous ruins of Indian origin, which testify to the importance played by this area in the last twenty centuries.

The park, consisting of the Canyon de Chelly and the Canyon del Muerto, which were excavated in the Defiance plateau by the Rio de Chelly and the Rio del Muerto, is at a variable height of around two thousand meters, with a depth sometimes greater even at three hundred meters.

The Grand Canyon of Arizona is considered one of the most beautiful in the United States and the world.

With a length of over 400 km with variable width, it is declared a national park.

It consists of an extensive gorge created by the flow of the Colorado River, whose waters have eroded the sedimented layers of the soil and rocks over time, we speak of millions of years.
