Few are the news regarding Sant'Aldo hermit, we don't even know the place and date of birth, there are those who believe that he lived in the eighth century but without having any certainty.

Instead, it is known for certain that he was buried in Pavia, initially in the Chapel of San Colombano, then the body was moved to the basilica of San Michele.

According to an ancient tradition, it is said that he worked as a charcoal burner, as well as living as a hermit in Carbonaria near Pavia.

The presence of the name of Sant'Aldo in the Benedictine martyrologists suggests that he was probably a monk in Bobbio, the famous convent established in 614 by San Colombano, located halfway between the Eastern monastery and the monastic community created a century earlier by San Blessed.

The meeting point of these two ways of asceticism seems indicated by the religious practice of Saint Aldo, a man of prayer with hardened hands and face blackened by the soot present in the charcoal burners where he worked.

The Irish monks of San Colombano did not have a rigid hermit life, in fact each of them set up their own hut made of wood and stones raised up to dry, inside a very simple wall, just enough to find some isolation in the contemplative hours dedicated to prayer.

After the time dedicated to the spirit, each monk came out of his refuge with work tools to go to cover his usual daily jobs, thus earning a living thanks to his sweat.

In summary it can be said that in practice the hermit temporarily moved away from normal life to dedicate a space of his time totally to prayer, trying to fill in this way the external solitude with the joyful presence of God.

But this does not mean absolutely that he alienated himself from the community, to whose spiritual growth he contributed by giving his example of devoted life oriented towards charity towards others.
