What to see in Monopoli, itinerary comprising the main monuments and places of interest, including the Church of Santa Maria Amalfitana, the Castle and the Cathedral, inside which there is the venerated Madonna of the madia.


Tourist information

City of Apula origin, Monopoli developed in medieval times, starting from the destruction of not far Egnazia.

Important Byzantine and Norman seaside resort, it was used by the Crusaders.


It was conquered by the Republic of Venice around the middle of the fifteenth century, subsequently, in 1509 it became part of the Spanish domains.

The Church of Santa Maria Amalfitana, built in Romanesque style in the twelfth century, was renovated several times.

The right side and the external part of the apse are very interesting from the original construction.


Nearby is the castle founded by Frederick II and later remodeled.

What see

The Cathedral, dating back to the early twelfth century, was rebuilt in the eighteenth century together with the bell tower.

Inside the Cathedral there are important paintings by Palma il Giovane and Francesco de Mura, as well as the Madonna della Madia, an icon of 1200, the object of great veneration by the faithful.


In the episcopal palace there are paintings by Paolo Veronese, Palma the Younger and seventeenth-century Neapolitan painters.

The facade of the Renaissance church dedicated to San Domenico is characterized by valuable sculptural works, also present at the entrance of the medieval crypt of the Madonna del Soccorso, dating back to the year one thousand.

In the surroundings of Monopoli there is the former abbey of Santo Stefano, built on the wishes of Goffredo d’Altavilla in 1086.
