San Carlo Borromeo

Carlo Borromeo was born in Arona, in the province of Novara, on October 2, 1538 and died in Milan on November 3, 1584.

As soon as he graduated in utroque iure, he was appointed cardinal by his uncle Pope Pius IV and elected bishop of Milan.


In the Lombard capital he proved to be a tireless shepherd of the flock.

He reviewed the whole diocese, visiting all the areas, called synods and carried out the most intense activity in every direction with the aim of obtaining the salvation of souls, using considerable energy to promote by all means a high level of Christian life .

San Carlo was considered among the major reformers of the Catholic church in the 16th century.


Among the most relevant reforms proposed by him and validated by the Council of Trent, the institution of seminars for the training of priests is included.

He died on November 3, 1584.
