St. John XXIII

Giuseppe Angelo Roncalli was born on 25 November 1881 in Brusicco, a hamlet of Sotto il Monte, in the province of Bergamo, and died on 3 June 1963 in Vatican City.

Born into a peasant family, he passed to Confirmation on February 13, 1889, under the bishopric of Monsignor Guindani.

Uncle Zaverio financed his studies at the minor seminary of Bergamo, where he won a scholarship which allowed him to move to the seminary of the Apollinare in Rome, today's Pontifical Roman Major Seminary, where he completed with honors the his studies and was ordained priest on 10 August 1904 in the church of Santa Maria in Montesanto, located in Piazza del Popolo.

During the period in which he stayed in Rome, while attending the funeral of Cardinal Lucido Maria Parocchi in 1903, he wrote: "If I possessed his science and virtue, I could well call myself satisfied."

From a very young age he manifested a great veneration for the Virgin Mary, going on pilgrimage numerous times to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Bosco near Imbersago.

In 1901 he was drafted into an infantry, Lombardy brigade, stationed in Bergamo.

He was elected pope of the Catholic Church, with the name of John XXIII, on October 28, 1958 and in just five years of pontificate he managed to give a renewed impetus to the work of evangelization of the Universal Church.

He is also fondly remembered with the nickname of a good Pope.

Franciscan tertiary, on September 3, 2000 he obtained beatification under the pontificate of Pope John Paul II and was canonized on April 27, 2014 by Pope Francis.
