The inhabited center of Roseto degli Abruzzi extends over a flat area located in the coastal area, while to the west the town also develops on the surrounding hills, from the hamlet of Montepagano, which is located almost three hundred meters above sea level, it is possible to dominate on the whole territory.

Montepagano, which constitutes the original village of Roseto, dating back to medieval times, is located above the hill overlooking the coastal strip, famous in the area for the abundant cultivation of roses, made from which it derived the previous name of Rosburgo, which means precisely city ​​of roses.


Montepagano Castle is a fortification perched on the Roseto hill, where works of art and important monuments of the past are preserved.

Despite its small size, Montepagano is a village that has handed down an ancient history capable of telling itself through its streets and squares overflowing with memories of the past.

Among the most important monuments to see is the Porta da Borea, with its pointed arch, in addition to the grandiose medieval walls.


In addition to this there are various churches to see, among which the most important is that of the Santissima Annunziata, finished in 1602, where the major religious events are held today.

What see

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which was originally dedicated to Santa Filomena, is in neo-Gothic style and dates back to 1863.

It has a gabled façade, with a Romanesque portal and a central round opening, also the interior has a single nave, while the bell tower is what remains of the old seventeenth century church of Santa Filomena.


The Church of the Sacred Heart is a modern building with a square plan, built in the sixties, with an external shape that rises to the center, with an octagonal dome of limited dimensions, while the interior is largely frescoed.

Santa Maria Annunziata, which is the parish church dating back to the end of the 16th century, has a rectangular structure with a large dome and a classical style marble portal.

The church of Sant’Antimo, decorated with a ceiling finished with golden plates, was demolished by Gioacchino Murat when the decree that abolished Christian worship was issued.

Roseto degli Abruzzi includes numerous tourist structures of various types, including hotels, campsites and bathing establishments.

There is also a marina, the coast includes an extensive sandy beach of almost eleven kilometers long.

The procession of the Madonna takes place on August 15 of each year which, positioned on a fishing boat, opens the way to the other boats that follow it.
