Martino, originally from Todi, was first priest in Rome and later apocrisary, or papal legate to the imperial court of Constantinople.

When he was elected Pope in 649, Martino had to face this problem in a short time.

So it was that he called a great synod in Rome in which some Greek theologians in dissent took part, including Massimo, later nicknamed the Confessor.

Thanks to his decisive help, the Roman synod established that the path of salvation was based on the incarnation of God.
