Saint martin

Martino, originally from Todi, was first priest in Rome and later apocrisary, or papal legate to the imperial court of Constantinople.

This turned out to be a perfect formation for the one who would become the future pope.

At that time theological discussions aimed to establish whether Jesus had one or two wills.

In summary, the question arose about the two natures of Christ, which had already been asked at the Council of Chalcedon.

The Council fathers had agreed that Jesus had two natures in order to completely save man.

On the contrary, some Byzantine theologians, supported by the emperor and for purely political purposes, did not refrain from presenting compromise formulas.

When he was elected Pope in 649, Martino had to face this problem in a short time.

So it was that he called a great synod in Rome in which some Greek theologians in dissent took part, including Massimo, later nicknamed the Confessor.

Thanks to his decisive help, the Roman synod established that the path of salvation was based on the incarnation of God.

Any denial of God made man in Jesus Christ would not make man's complete redemption possible.

This assertion made Emperor Constantine II, who sent the exarch Olympian to Italy with the order to take the Pope prisoner to the East.

But Olimpio, disobeying, became the lord of Italy and for three years took over the reins of the peninsula government.

During this period Martino had the opportunity to carry out his ministry freely.

But when Olympian was killed in battle, Constant sent a new emissary who arrested the Pope leading him to Constantinople.

Martino was sentenced and imprisoned in Cherson, on the Crimean peninsula, where he ceased to live in 655.

St. Martin Pope is venerated all over the world as a martyr for the faith.
