Psalm 99: complete, commentary

CommentIn Psalm 99 the author celebrates the kingship of God above all peoples and affirms that in front of this all peoples must be afraid and recognize God. In the history of Israel the figures of Moses, Aaron and Samuel stand out. psalmist recalls the mercy of God towards them, who were forgiven despite being chastened for their sins.

[1] The Lord reigns, peoples tremble; sits on cherubs, shakes the earth.

[2] Great is the Lord in Zion, excelled over all peoples.


[3] May they praise your great and terrible name, because it is holy.

[4] A powerful king who loves justice, you have established what is righteous, right and justice you exercise in Jacob.

[5] Exalt the Lord our God, bow down to the stool of his feet, because he is holy.


[6] Moses and Aaron among his priests, Samuel among those who invoke his name: they invoked the Lord and he answered.

[7] He spoke to them from a column of clouds: they obeyed his commands and the law he had given them.

[8] Lord, our God, you answered them, you were a patient God to them, even though they chastised their sins.

[9] Exalt the Lord our God, bow down before his holy mountain, because the Lord our God is holy.
